Research shows that students drop out of university if they feel that they do not fit into their degree courses. Personal tutors have been shown to be central to student integration into the university and into academic life. This workshop will cover the university’s approach to personal tutoring from different perspectives. We will start with an overview of the University policy on personal tutoring. Professional boundaries and the role of the personal tutor will be discussed. This will be followed by an exploration of the academic and support services that tutors can refer students to, if required. A senior mental advisor from the Student Wellbeing Service will be present to discuss student mental health issues and a member of the Students' Union Advice Centre will give an overview of the support they provide to students on academic procedures such as disciplinary issues, complaints and extenuating circumstances, as well as advice on a range of non-academic issues. A highly experienced personal tutor - voted ‘Best Personal Tutor’ (and ‘Best Feedback’) in 2015 Students’ Union Teaching Awards - will share his experiences of managing different aspects of the role.

The Students’ Union Advice Centre has invited all participants for refreshments at the Students’ Union which is just across the road from Mercantile House. Personal tutors will have an opportunity to become more familiar with the Advice Centre and what it has to offer their students.

Please note that a £15 charge will be levied against University of Portsmouth Departments where a member of their staff has booked but not attended, unless DCQE has been notified of their absence at least 48 hours prior to the time of the event.
